CRP-High Sensitive (hsCRP)

CRP measured at the low levels that matter for heart risk. Below 1 mg/L is low risk, above 3 is high

What is the hs-CRP test?

hs-CRP measures C-reactive protein at the very low levels, under 10 mg/L, that an ordinary CRP test cannot read reliably. CRP is made by the liver whenever there is inflammation anywhere in the body, and the high-sensitivity assay picks up the low, steady inflammation inside artery walls.

It is used to refine heart-attack and stroke risk in people whose cholesterol and blood pressure put them in the middle. Below 1 mg/L means little added risk, 1 to 3 mg/L average, and above 3 mg/L high. A value above 10 mg/L usually means an infection or injury rather than heart risk, and the test should be repeated after two weeks. It does not diagnose heart disease; it tells your doctor how hard to push on cholesterol, weight and smoking.

No fasting is needed. The sample is collected at home and the report arrives on WhatsApp and email in 8 hours.

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a marker of low-grade inflammation in the blood vessels, rising with obesity, smoking or infection and flagging heart risk

How to prepare

  • No fasting is needed.
  • Postpone the test if you have had a fever, cold, injury or infection in the past two weeks; wait until you are well.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise the day before.

Who should take it

Adults between 35 and 65 whose heart-risk estimate is intermediate and whose doctor is deciding on a statin. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, a large waist or a family history of early heart disease. Anyone who has had a heart attack or stent, to track inflammation on treatment. It is not useful during a cold, fever, dental infection or in the weeks after surgery, when CRP is high for other reasons. Two readings two weeks apart give the most reliable picture.

Before the visit

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, use oral contraceptives or hormone replacement, take statins or NSAID painkillers, or have arthritis, gum disease or any inflammatory condition; all of these move CRP.

Why take the hs-CRP test?

  • Sharper heart risk: Adds to what cholesterol says, especially when LDL is borderline.
  • Diabetes and metabolic syndrome: Both raise background inflammation, and hs-CRP shows how much.
  • Family history: A parent with early heart disease and normal cholesterol is a common reason to check.
  • Tracking change: Weight loss, exercise and statins all lower hs-CRP, and repeat tests show it.

Questions about the hs-CRP test

What is the hs-CRP test used for?

It measures low-level inflammation in the blood to refine your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Doctors use it when cholesterol and blood pressure put you in the middle range and they are deciding how aggressively to treat.

Do I need to fast for an hs-CRP test?

No fasting is needed. What matters is being well: postpone the test if you have had a fever, cold, injury, dental infection or surgery in the past two weeks, as any of these raises CRP for reasons unrelated to your heart.

What sample is taken and how does home collection work?

A small blood sample from a vein in the arm. A trained phlebotomist comes to your home with a sealed single-use kit, draws the sample in a few minutes, and carries it to the lab.

What is the normal range for hs-CRP?

The report gives a single value in mg/L. Below 1 mg/L is low added heart risk, 1 to 3 mg/L is average, and above 3 mg/L is high. Above 10 mg/L usually means an infection or injury and the test should be repeated in two weeks.

What does a high hs-CRP mean?

A value above 3 mg/L, on two readings two weeks apart, means persistent low-grade inflammation and a higher chance of a heart attack or stroke than your cholesterol alone suggests. Your doctor may lower your LDL target, start or increase a statin, and push harder on weight, exercise and smoking.

Who should get an hs-CRP test and how often?

Adults between 35 and 65 with intermediate heart risk, people with diabetes, metabolic syndrome or a family history of early heart disease, and anyone after a heart attack or stent. It is usually done once, or twice two weeks apart, and repeated only to check the effect of treatment.

How long does the hs-CRP report take?

The report reaches you on WhatsApp and email in 8 hours from the time the phlebotomist collects the sample at your home. Book a morning slot and you will usually have it the same day.

Is hs-CRP the same as a normal CRP test?

No. Both measure the same protein, but a standard CRP test is designed for the high values seen in infections and arthritis. The high-sensitivity assay reads accurately below 10 mg/L, where the differences that predict heart risk sit. A normal CRP cannot replace it.
