Body Contouring & Fat Reduction
Non-surgical approaches designed to reduce localised fat or improve body contour
What is body contouring & fat reduction?
Non-surgical body contouring uses a device applied to the skin to act on the fat layer beneath it, by cooling it, heating it with radiofrequency or ultrasound, or stimulating the muscle underneath. Fat cells damaged by controlled cooling or heating are cleared by the body gradually over the following weeks.
It works on a defined pocket of fat that has not responded to diet and exercise, in someone who is already close to the weight they want to be. It removes a share of the fat layer in the area treated, and the change is measured in centimetres and in how clothes fit.
It does not reduce body weight and it does not substitute for losing weight. Fat cells left behind still enlarge if you gain weight afterwards, so the result holds only while your weight does.
What it involves
No anaesthetic is needed and you stay awake and comfortable throughout. Treatment happens in the clinic and you leave immediately afterwards.
Your doctor measures and photographs the area, marks it, and positions the applicator or hand-piece. Cooling treatments draw the tissue into a cup and feel intensely cold with a strong pull for the first ten minutes before the area goes numb; heat-based treatments feel warm and are massaged over the area. Neither is painful, and most people read or use a phone through the session.
Allow thirty to sixty minutes per area, with a short massage of the treated area afterwards. Most plans involve two to four sessions per area spaced six to twelve weeks apart, and your doctor will set the number at the first visit based on what you want to change.
Recovery
There is no recovery period and no time off work. You can go back to the office or the gym the same day.
The treated area is commonly red, swollen, tender, firm and numb afterwards. Numbness and tenderness can last one to three weeks, and the area may feel bruised when pressed. Cramping and itching in the first week are usual. Wear loose clothing for a few days and take a simple painkiller if you need one.
The change appears slowly as the body clears the treated cells. The first visible difference comes at six to eight weeks, and the final result at three to four months, which is also when your doctor will measure and photograph you again and decide whether the area needs another session.
Questions about body contouring & fat reduction
How much fat will this remove?
A share of the fat layer in the area treated, and the change is measured in centimetres of circumference instead of kilograms on a scale. Most people need two to four sessions per area, spaced six to twelve weeks apart, to reach a visible difference, and the result is a smoother contour in that pocket instead of a change in body size. It is intended for someone already close to their target weight with a stubborn area. If your goal is weight loss, this is the wrong treatment, and your doctor should say so.
When will I see the result, and will it last?
The first visible change comes at six to eight weeks and the final result at three to four months, because the body clears the treated fat cells gradually. Photographs and tape measurements at the start and at three months are how it is judged. The treated cells do not return, and the result lasts as long as your weight does: the fat cells remaining in that area and everywhere else still enlarge if you gain weight, so the contour softens again. Maintaining your weight is part of the treatment.
Is there any downtime, and does it hurt?
You can return to work and to the gym the same day. Cooling treatments feel intensely cold with a strong pulling sensation for about ten minutes, and then the area goes numb for the rest of the session. Heat-based treatments feel warm throughout. Afterwards the area is usually red, swollen, firm and numb, often tender when pressed, and cramping and itching are common in the first week. Numbness can take one to three weeks to wear off. Loose clothing for a few days helps.
